The tobacco industry targets young adults in college. College administrators can promote healthful student development by adopting tobacco-free campus policies.
I managed the evaluation of the NC Tobacco-Free Colleges Initiative, and NC led the nation in the number of voluntarily adopted tobacco-free campus policies.
While we know that smoke-free policies work, we know little about their impact on college campuses. We used cigarette butts near entrances to key buildings to provide an objective measure of effectiveness.
After adoption of a policy, its implementation become critically important. With a student team, we provide practical advice on how to use GIS mapping to “encourage” a university to improve its signage.
